Senior Tax Manager

Job Title: Senior Tax Manager
Location: Coventry or Leeds
Company: Oldfield Accountancy & Advisory

About Us:
We’re not your typical accountancy practice. Yes, we deliver expert accounting, tax, and advisory services but growth is at the heart of everything we do, for our clients and our business. That’s where you come in. We operate from modern premises in Coventry and Leeds and provide excellent working conditions for everyone that chooses to create their career with Oldfield.

Job Purpose

This is not a tax compliance role. It is a planning role where the work you do changes what your clients keep.

As a Senior Tax Manager, you will lead personal tax planning projects for business owners.  Inheritance Tax planning, Trusts, Family Investment Companies, and bespoke wills. These are the conversations that sit behind every successful owner-managed business: How do I pass this on without a large Inheritance Tax bill? How do I plan for succession without giving up control too early? What happens to all of this if something happens to me?

To do this well, you have to understand the client, not just the legislation. You’ll take time to understand what clients want for the next generation, what worries them, and what they’re prepared to give up to get there. Then you design a structure that works is technically sound, ethically robust, and simple enough for the client to understand and own.

You won’t just write the advice and hand it over. You’ll take each project from the first steps plan through to completion: instructing solicitors, managing the HMRC filings and clearances, keeping every stakeholder informed, and making sure nothing slips. Your value is measured by the quality of your planning, the outcomes you deliver for clients, and the strength of the team you develop around you.

The Role
  • Own the plan, end to end. You prepare the project plan and steps plan for each restructure, with clear timelines, deliverables and HMRC deadlines. Then you see it through instructing solicitors, completing the filings, and keeping clients and stakeholders informed at every stage.
  • Turn legislation into a clear recommendation. Clients don’t need a lecture on case law. They need someone who can say “here are your options, here’s what each one costs you and saves you, and here’s what I’d do.” Your tax analysis is rigorous and fully referenced; your advice to the client is plain.
  • Spot what others miss. Every project you work on is a chance to find the next opportunity, a further mitigation step, a structure that would suit another shareholder, a risk that hasn’t been addressed. You implement what’s agreed and keep looking for what’s next.
  • Be the quality gate. You review the work of Tax Advisers and Junior Tax Advisers, steps plans, tax analysis and HMRC clearance applications making sure every project holds up to HMRC scrutiny and delivers the best outcome for the client.
  • Deliver on time and on budget. You manage your projects to internal and statutory deadlines and to budget, handling sensitive personal and financial information with complete confidentiality.
  • Develop the team. You coach and mentor Tax Advisers to build their technical depth, support junior staff with internal and external queries.
  • Make things better. You’ll contribute ideas to improve how we work and help the firm grow its revenue and manage its costs.
Who This Role Is For

We’re less interested in your job title and more interested in how you think. This role suits two types of people:

You’re in practice and want more planning, less processing
You’re CTA qualified (or equivalent) and technically strong, but too much of your week goes on returns and routine compliance. The work you actually enjoy is the planning — sitting down with a client, understanding what they want, and building the structure that gets them there. You want a role where that is the job.

You’re in a larger firm and want ownership
You’ve worked on complex personal tax and restructuring projects, but you’ve been one part of a big machine. You want to own projects from start to finish, work directly with business owners, and see the difference your advice makes. You also want to lead and develop a team, not just sit in one.

What Sets You Apart

The core skill in this role is taking complex tax legislation and turning it into a clear, practical plan that a business owner can understand and act on. Beyond that:

  • You combine rigour with judgement. You follow the firm’s checklists and processes because accuracy matters but you also know when a situation needs fresh thinking rather than a template answer.
  • You take ownership. If a project is off track or a client is unhappy, it’s your problem to fix not something to escalate or deflect.
  • You have a solutions mindset. When a client’s situation is complicated, you look for the route that works rather than the reasons it can’t.
  • Delivery of project includes effective communication with client, internally and other 3rd parties (including solicitors)
  • You can explain it at every level. From a technical review with a junior colleague to a presentation to a client, you communicate clearly and with confidence.
  • You keep learning. Tax legislation and case law move constantly. You’re keen to keep growing your knowledge, and you use the firm’s resources to research and advise on complex matters beyond the day-to-day.
What You’ll Need
  • CTA qualified or equivalent
  • A high level of expertise in all relevant direct taxes in a transactional context, including Corporation Tax, Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Stamp Taxes, Inheritance Tax and Employment Taxes
  • Hands-on experience of IHT planning, Trusts, Family Investment Companies and wills-based planning
  • Experience preparing steps plans, tax analysis and HMRC clearance applications
  • Experience reviewing the work of others and supporting their development
  • Exposure to owner-managed businesses and the people who run them
An Honest Note About This Role

This role asks for two things that don’t always sit together. You need the discipline to get every detail right. The legislation, the filings, the deadlines, because a mistake here costs a client real money. But you also need to sit across from a business owner, talk about their plans for the future, and give them a clear recommendation rather than a list of caveats. If you only want one half of that, this probably isn’t the role for you. If you want both, we should talk.

  • Specialist planning work - IHT, Trusts, Family Investment Companies and bespoke wills
  • Ownership of projects from first plan to final filing
  • A team to lead and develop, with a Team Manager alongside you on people management
