The Role:
A lot of senior accountant roles are just more of the same work, faster. You're still doing the bulk of the production, you're still waiting for someone else to review it, and the 'senior' part mostly means a larger pile of files. This role is different in a specific way:
Your job is to make sure the work is right, not just to do it. You'll take ownership of review, making sure the work is complete and technically accurate. Stepping in to prepare where needed but spending a meaningful part of your time on quality, consistency, and developing the people around you. The work spans statutory accounts, management accounts, tax returns and much more. Clients range from small, limited companies and partnerships to consolidated groups, so strong technical knowledge and a sharp eye for detail are a must.
Alongside delivery, you'll coach junior team members. Not in a formal way, in the day-to-day way that actually builds capability, explaining the why behind a treatment, catching a recurring error before it becomes a habit, helping someone think through a client query they're not sure how to answer.
What You'll Actually Do
- Review and oversee the preparation of statutory and management accounts, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards
- Review and oversee the preparation of self-assessment, corporation tax, and partnership tax returns
- Prepare and review dividend and interest planning calculations for clients
- Build strong client relationships through clear, professional communication
- Identify opportunities to add value within the client portfolio
- Support, coach and mentor junior team members in developing their technical knowledge and professional skills
- Work alongside the Team Manager to provide guidance and development support across the team
- Assist with resolving internal and external queries in a timely and accurate manner
Who This Role Is For
You're qualified and ready to step back from production
You're ACA or ACCA qualified with solid practice experience, gained in busy, target-driven environments, and the technical work comes naturally. But what you're really looking for is more time on quality control and training, and less time staring at a trial balance.
You're ready to own the final review
You're comfortable being the last set of eyes, taking responsibility for final review and sign-off and standing behind the work that leaves the door. You hold standards high when the pace picks up, and you communicate well, giving honest, constructive feedback whether to a team member or a client, and whether it's good news or bad.
What Sets You Apart
- ACA or ACCA qualified, with experience in a practice environment
- Proven track record of delivering complex group financial consolidations and statutory reporting
- Confident liaising with auditors, responding to audit queries and resolving complex technical accounting questions on the accounts we've prepared
- Experience reviewing the work of others, not just preparing it
- Hands-on experience preparing and reviewing accounts for medium-sized companies and consolidated groups
- A solid working knowledge of Corporation Tax, Personal Tax, and related areas
- Comfortable with accounting software and able to interrogate financial reports critically
- You’re a target driven individual who thrives working in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communicator with clients and colleagues alike
- High attention to detail and a consistent, process-driven approach
- Genuinely interested in learning and keeping your technical knowledge current
